Pentagon Awards SpaceX $6.5 Billion for Defense Satellites
The Pentagon awarded SpaceX two satellite contracts totaling $6.5 billion to develop military surveillance and space-based communications for missile defense.
The United States Department of Defense awarded Space Exploration Technologies Corp. two major satellite contracts totaling approximately $6.5 billion. According to a Pentagon announcement, the funding is divided between two primary strategic initiatives designed to advance military surveillance and space-based communications capabilities.
The larger portion of the award, $4.16 billion, is designated for the development of the AMTI satellite constellation. This program focuses on enhancing the military's ability to track and identify threats in space. The remaining $2.29 billion is allocated to the Space Data Network, which aims to modernize the infrastructure used for transmitting critical data between space assets and ground stations.
Pentagon officials stated that these technological developments are intended to support next-generation missile defense operations. By integrating these two systems, the military seeks to reduce response times and increase the precision of its orbital surveillance. These contracts represent a significant expansion of the role of private aerospace firms in national security infrastructure, as the Department of Defense shifts toward more agile, commercially developed space constellations to maintain a strategic advantage in missile defense.
