Russia Deploys Geran-5 Jet Drones in Ukraine Aerial Campaign
Russia has deployed high-speed Geran-5 jet drones to degrade Ukrainian defenses while Ukraine launched Operation Vivaldi to recapture territory in Donetsk.
The Federal Government of Russia has deployed the Geran-5, a new long-range, jet-powered drone capable of speeds of 600 km/h and altitudes of 6,000 meters. The drone utilizes machine vision for autonomous target selection and anti-jamming technology, significantly challenging Ukrainian aerial defenses. Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Colonel Yuriy Ihnat reported that interception rates for the Geran-5 are only 60 percent, a sharp decline from the 95 percent success rate against other drone variants, forcing Ukraine to rely more heavily on fighter jets.
Ukrainian military intelligence identified that the Geran-5 supply chain includes Chinese jet engines, US digital processors, and German transistors. Alongside the drone deployment, Russia conducted round-the-clock bombardments targeting data centers in Kyiv, a postal hub in Odesa, and cargo ships in the Black Sea and Chornomorsk. These strikes killed at least three civilians and wounded 41 others.
In response, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine oversaw Operation Vivaldi, during which the Third Army Corps claimed to recapture 51 square kilometers in the Donetsk region. Ukrainian forces utilized ground robots and kamikaze BTR-60 vehicles to breach Russian fortifications. Meanwhile, Ukrainian drones targeted three infrastructure facilities in the Krasnodar region of Russia.
