Conservatives Sue to Block Abortion Rights Ads in Idaho

The Idaho Family Policy Center filed a lawsuit to stop television ads supporting a ballot initiative to repeal the state's abortion ban.

The Idaho Family Policy Center and Too Extreme for Idaho PAC filed a lawsuit in Canyon County court on October 27, 2026, seeking to block television advertisements supporting Proposition 1. The ballot initiative, which would repeal Idaho's abortion ban, faces a voter decision on November 3.

Plaintiffs allege that Idahoans United for Women and Families colluded with the Idaho Democratic Party to misclassify issue ads as candidate ads for gubernatorial candidate Terri Pickens. The lawsuit claims this maneuver allowed the groups to illegally obtain lower broadcast rates required by the FCC and concealed the true source of funding in violation of state campaign finance laws.

The Idaho Democratic Party dismissed the legal action as frivolous, maintaining that the advertisements comply with the law and that political parties are permitted to spend unlimited funds in coordination with candidates. The Idaho Secretary of State's office previously indicated the ads did not violate campaign finance laws, though a spokesperson later clarified the office is not conducting a formal investigation because no official complaint regarding the specific advertisements has been filed.
