UN and ICC Link RSF Leadership to Darfur Genocide

The UN and ICC report that the Rapid Support Forces committed genocide in al-Fashir and have found concrete evidence linking RSF leaders to massacres.

A United Nations Fact-Finding Mission for Sudan report released Wednesday concludes that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and its allies committed genocide in al-Fashir, North Darfur. The probe documented mass killings—including over 6,000 deaths during the city's capture in October 2025—systematic gang rapes, abductions, and the war crime of forced starvation via the destruction of food systems.

Simultaneously, the International Criminal Court announced a breakthrough in its investigation into war crimes in Darfur. Deputy Chief Prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan stated the court possesses concrete evidence linking RSF leadership figures to massacres in al-Fashir and al-Junaynah. While the RSF denies these allegations and claims accounts are manufactured by enemies, leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo stated the group is investigating atrocities.

UN officials warned that similar patterns of encirclement and civilian abuse are now emerging in al-Obeid, North Kordofan. In response, the UN Human Rights Council passed a resolution on Monday ordering an urgent inquiry into al-Obeid to prevent a repeat of the catastrophe seen in al-Fashir.
