UK and COAI Sign MoU to Combat Digital Fraud

The British High Commission to India and the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on September 14, 2026, in New Delhi to strengthen cooperation on artificial intelligence, digital connectivity, and digital trust. Announced during the CO.AI 2026 conference, the agreement establishes a framework for sharing knowledge to bolster resilience against transnational organized crime and AI-aided scams.

The partnership integrates with the UK-India Vision 2035 and the Technology Security Initiative. It aims to transform communication networks into AI-enabled systems capable of optimizing performance and protecting citizens from nefarious actors. This focus is particularly urgent given that over two-thirds of fraud cases in the United Kingdom involve international elements.

Ben Mellor, Acting British High Commissioner, stated that AI can help institutions move from reacting to individual incidents toward recognizing patterns of harm early. COAI Director General S.P. Kochhar noted that the collaboration provides an international perspective to common global challenges, ensuring that India's next phase of connectivity remains intelligent, secure, and citizen-centric.
