International Organization for Mediation Marks First Anniversary in Hong Kong
The International Organization for Mediation celebrated its first anniversary with 48 member states and reported successful settlements of international maritime and infrastructure disputes.
The International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) marked its first anniversary on October 20, 2026, at its headquarters in Hong Kong. The intergovernmental legal organization reported significant growth since its 2025 launch, expanding its membership from 33 to 48 signatory and acceding states and increasing its contracting states from eight to 18 across five continents.
During anniversary events and a news briefing by Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning, officials highlighted the organization's role as an international public good for resolving interstate and cross-border commercial disputes. IOMed has successfully mediated several cases, including a maritime dispute between enterprises from China and Singapore and a settlement regarding an infrastructure project in Malaysia.
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu and Commissioner Cui Jianchun reaffirmed the support of the Hong Kong SAR and Chinese governments, with the goal of establishing Hong Kong as a Global Capital of Mediation. Lee proposed the creation of a special mediator panel specifically for commodity trading to leverage the city's status as a bilingual common law jurisdiction.
Looking forward, IOMed plans to launch a mediation moot competition for youth and will host the inaugural IOMed Forum on December 8, 2026, under the theme "Mediation for Peace and Prosperity — The New Frontier."
