KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun Vows Taiwan Will Retaliate if Attacked

Cheng Li-wun states Taiwan will fight back against Chinese force and proposes new defense legislation following a diplomatic tour of the United States.

The Chairwoman of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), Cheng Li-wun, announced that Taiwan would fight back and retaliate if China employs military force, despite the KMT's opposition to Taiwanese independence and pursuit of peace. In an interview with The Economist, Cheng asserted that Taiwan must not be utilized as a political tool or bargaining chip in trade negotiations.

Following a two-week tour of the United States aimed at clarifying party policies and establishing communication channels, Cheng revealed plans for the KMT to propose legislative bills. These measures would focus on enhancing domestic drone production and strengthening national defense industries.

Cheng noted that these bills are unlikely to pass before the potential visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to the United States in September. She advocated for increased partnerships with the U.S. and the international community to maintain stability and reduce the risk of conflict in the Indo-Pacific region.
