Boeing Reports $5.3 Billion Q3 Loss Amid 777X Delays

The Boeing Company reported a net loss of approximately $5.3 billion for the third quarter of 2025, driven largely by a $4.9 billion pre-tax charge stemming from certification delays of its 777X wide-body jet. First deliveries of the 777X have been pushed from 2026 to 2027, bringing total program charges to nearly $15 billion. Despite this, revenue grew 30% year-over-year to $23.3 billion, supported by 160 commercial aircraft deliveries—the highest quarterly volume since 2018.

CEO Kelly Ortberg announced that the company returned to positive free cash flow for the first time since 2023, though this was partially aided by a delayed $700 million payment to the U.S. Department of Justice. Boeing also reached an agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration to increase 737 MAX production to 42 aircraft per month, up from a cap of 38. In its defense and space segment, the company secured a $2.8 billion contract from the U.S. Space Force for the Evolved Strategic Satcom program.

Operational challenges persist as approximately 3,200 machinists represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers remain on strike at three plants in St. Louis. Additionally, Boeing is pursuing a potential order of up to 500 jets from Chinese airlines, contingent on approval from the Government of China and diplomatic negotiations between President Donald Trump and leader Xi Jinping. Analysts note that continued delays may allow competitor Airbus SE to capture more of the wide-body market.
