Bernie Sanders Endorses Angie Nixon for Florida Senate Seat

Democratic nominee Angie Nixon will face Republican incumbent Ashley Moody in the November election after winning the Democratic primary and receiving an endorsement from Bernie Sanders.

Democratic nominee Angie Nixon secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Florida after defeating former National Security Council aide Alex Vindman by 12 percentage points in the primary. Nixon, a Florida State Representative and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, performed strongly with Black and younger voters, though she struggled in college-educated areas and among some Jewish voters due to her positions on the conflict in Gaza.

Following the primary, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders endorsed Nixon on August 20, describing her as evidence that organized people can defeat organized money. Nixon reported raising $1 million in the 48 hours following her victory. Vindman supported the transition by donating $400,000 to the Florida Democratic Party and urging his supporters to back Nixon.

Nixon will face Republican incumbent Senator Ashley Moody in the November election. Moody, who was appointed to the seat by Governor Ron DeSantis in January 2025 after Marco Rubio joined the president's Cabinet, has used Nixon's socialist affiliation to characterize the Democratic Party as out of touch. Nixon will run on a ticket alongside Democratic gubernatorial nominee David Jolly, a former Republican, highlighting ideological tensions within the state party.
