Deena Beeston Runs for Full Term as Ladysmith Mayor

Mayor Deena Beeston is campaigning for a full term in the October 17 municipal election against incumbent Councillor Ray Gourlay.

The official candidate slate for the 2026 Ladysmith municipal election features a two-way race for mayor between Deena Beeston and incumbent Councillor Ray Gourlay. Beeston, who first entered office via a 2025 byelection following the resignation of former mayor Aaron Stone, is seeking her first full term.

Reflecting on her first 18 months in office, Beeston noted a steep learning curve regarding municipal operations and the challenges of initiating change. Her platform for a second term focuses on scrutinizing spending to manage taxation, reviewing town bylaws for clarity, and improving cycling and trail connections to neighboring communities.

Beeston also intends to advocate for increased senior government support for housing and homelessness and aims to strengthen the town's relationship with the Stz’uminus First Nation regarding economic opportunities and the waterfront.

Beyond the mayoral race, nine candidates are competing for six council seats. Jeff Virtanen is the only incumbent councillor seeking re-election, joined by eight new candidates. General voting takes place October 17 at the Frank Jameson Community Centre, with advance voting available October 7 and 14 at City Hall.
