EU Electric Vehicle Sales Hit Record 1.64 Million Units

Electric vehicle sales in the European Union rose 45 percent to 1.64 million units through August 2026, driven by affordable models and rising diesel prices.

Electric vehicle sales in the European Union reached record volumes between January and August 2026, with 1.64 million units sold. This represents a 45 percent increase year-on-year, with EVs capturing 22 percent of the total market, an increase of six percentage points from the previous year.

According to the European Federation for Transport and Environment, the growth stems from carmakers expanding their lineups with affordable models to meet EU emissions targets and avoid financial penalties. European manufacturers currently dominate the market with nearly 60 percent of available models, while Chinese carmakers hold 21 percent.

External economic factors have accelerated the shift away from combustion-engine vehicles. Diesel prices have risen 38 percent since the start of the Iran war, further incentivizing consumers to switch to electric options. To close its own compliance gap, Volkswagen Group is rolling out more accessible vehicles, including an all-electric version of the Polo.
