Alberta Energy Rebate Sees Low Uptake Among Residents

The Government of Alberta reports low participation in its one-time $100 energy rebate program, with only 1.2 million of 3.4 million eligible residents applying for the payment. Premier Danielle Smith championed the rebate as an equitable alternative to fuel tax cuts, though the program excluded households with combined incomes exceeding $225,000.

Critics argue the application process was intrusive and complicated because it required residents to provide tax information and Social Insurance Numbers. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation estimated that direct pump price reductions would have been more beneficial, potentially saving two-car families between $200 and $350 over the summer months.

As of September 16, the province is determining tax relief for the final quarter of the year. The government is calculating relief for October through December based on the average price of West Texas Intermediate crude oil. A price average exceeding US$90 per barrel will trigger a 13-cent-per-litre reduction at the pump.
