Jim Ratcliffe Warns UK is On the Slide

Ineos founder and Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe stated that the United Kingdom is "on the slide" and in a state of decline. Speaking in Denmark and in a BBC interview, Ratcliffe attributed this downturn to high taxes, high immigration, rising street crime, and excessive welfare spending. He argued that a "politics of envy" and cultural hostility toward wealth are driving successful individuals to relocate abroad, noting that he himself became a tax resident of Monaco in 2020.

Ratcliffe specifically labeled the government's hesitation to develop the Rosebank and Jackdaw North Sea oil and gas fields as "insanity." He warned that insufficient gas storage levels could lead to shortages and forced industrial shutdowns if the country experiences a severe cold spell this winter. To address economic stagnation, he proposed cutting the benefits bill by half to fund investments in robotics and artificial intelligence.

The Government of the United Kingdom rejected these claims, stating that business investment has increased and that a diverse energy mix ensures security of supply. While the government emphasized a transition to homegrown clean power, Ratcliffe noted that Ineos invested in the European Union's first carbon capture and storage system in Denmark due to a lack of sufficient government support for such technology in the UK.
