Pattaya Police Crack Down on Sex Work Ahead of USS Lincoln Visit

The USS Abraham Lincoln is scheduled to make its first port call since November in Chonburi province, Thailand, near the city of Pattaya. The aircraft carrier carries over 5,000 service members returning to the United States after a deployment in the Middle East as part of a conflict against Iran. The crew spent more than 250 uninterrupted days at sea, a period marked by reports of supply shortages and deteriorating mental health, including attempted suicides.

In anticipation of the arrival, the Royal Thai Police are intensifying a crackdown on sex workers in Pattaya. While prostitution is illegal under Thai law, it frequently operates openly in major tourist hubs. City Police Chief Anek Srathongyoo ordered stepped-up security and warned that U.S. service members who break Thai law will be prosecuted.

Local authorities have implemented specific restrictions for the visiting sailors, banning marijuana use and parasailing. Provincial Governor Narit Niramaiwong organized 600 officials to provide security and assistance, while officials warned local businesses against overcharging the personnel. Mayor Poramet Ngampichet welcomed the visit as a necessary boost to the local economy during a global tourism slump.
