New Energy Vehicles Reach 49 Percent of China's New Registrations
China registered over 5.19 million new energy vehicles in the first half of 2026, accounting for nearly half of all new automobile registrations.
The Ministry of Public Security reported that new energy vehicles (NEVs) accounted for 49.42 percent of all newly registered automobiles in China during the first half of 2026. This represents an increase of 4.45 percentage points over the same period in 2025.
Between January and June 2026, traffic authorities registered more than 5.19 million NEVs out of a total of 10.51 million new automobiles. Pure electric vehicles constituted 68.77 percent of the NEV segment.
By the end of June 2026, China's total vehicle fleet grew to 476 million units. NEVs totaled 48.97 million vehicles, making up 13.19 percent of the overall fleet.
