Students' List Topples Aleksandar Vucic in Serbian Election

The student-led Students' List won Serbia's October 25 parliamentary elections, triggering the collapse of Aleksandar Vucic's decade-long rule and a wave of high-profile corruption arrests.

The student-led Students' List won a decisive victory in Serbia's early parliamentary elections on October 25, ending the decade-long rule of Aleksandar Vucic and the Serbian Progressive Party. While the movement has not yet formally assumed power or named a prime minister, its victory has triggered a rapid collapse of the former regime's power structure.

Authorities have initiated a series of high-profile arrests targeting Vucic's inner circle. Detainees include criminal police chief Marko Kricak, accused of manipulating a murder investigation, and Alta Bank owner Davor Macura, suspected of misappropriating 45 billion dinars. Bosko Sekulovic, head of the Office for Suppression of Crime, was also arrested for misuse of office. Additionally, police in Mali Zvornik detained six individuals for providing false residence papers to Bosnian citizens to influence the vote.

Prosecutors are now processing a surge of complaints regarding illegal surveillance, corruption, and election fraud, including allegations that prison wardens bribed inmates to vote for Vucic. In response, the central bank revoked the license of Alta Banka AD, and leadership at the state broadcaster has begun to resign or apologize for biased coverage.

Aleksandar Vucic has remained defiant, characterizing the movement as "revolutionary terror" and claiming that investigators "don’t have anything." The Students' List has proposed a 100-day plan focused on anti-corruption reforms, auditing government spending, and restructuring state institutions to reduce reliance on crony capitalism and exploitative foreign investment.
