CenterPoint Energy Discloses Unauthorized Customer Data Breach

CenterPoint Energy disclosed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing on September 14 that an unauthorized third party obtained personal information from a portion of its customers. The Texas-based utility discovered the breach after an online post claimed to have obtained a customer data set.

In response to the discovery, the company activated cybersecurity incident response protocols and hired third-party experts to secure its systems. CenterPoint Energy confirmed that its electric and gas services remain operational and were not affected by the incident.

While the company expects to incur expenses related to the breach, it believes its cybersecurity insurance will offset these costs. The utility does not anticipate a material impact on its financial condition or operational results.
