Taiwan President Lai Ching-te Seeks $6.6 Billion Drone Budget

President Lai Ching-te is urging Taiwan's opposition-controlled parliament to approve a T$210 billion ($6.6 billion) special budget over six years to procure approximately 210,000 military drones. The government argues that conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East prove the necessity of uncrewed weapons to create a "hellscape" for the Chinese military and establish asymmetric combat capabilities.

The opposition Kuomintang party opposes the bulk budget, proposing instead an annual spending cap of T$40 billion managed by the economy ministry to prevent the purchase of technology that may quickly become obsolete. Defense Minister Wellington Koo rejected this proposal, stating that such a cap would hinder capability buildup and noting that planned spending for 2027 alone is T$42.1 billion.

China's Taiwan Affairs Office criticized the procurement push as an attempt to seek independence by force. The agency asserted that the trend toward reunification is inevitable and cannot be stopped.
