UK Threatens Total Eritrean Visa Ban Over Migrant Returns

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood threatened a complete ban on Eritrean citizens entering the UK unless the Eritrean government accepts the return of rejected asylum seekers.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has threatened to impose a complete ban on Eritrean citizens entering the United Kingdom unless the Eritrean government agrees to accept the return of foreign national offenders and rejected asylum seekers. The UK government accused Eritrea of abruptly withdrawing cooperation on returns earlier this year, noting that Eritreans accounted for 18% of small boat arrivals in the year ending June 2026.

As an immediate response, the UK stripped Eritrean VIPs of fast-track visa access and restricted Eritrean diplomats from traveling more than 60km outside London without permission. The Home Office stated these movement restrictions mirror those placed on British officials in Asmara.

Mahmood indicated that the UK has previously used similar visa sanction threats against Angola, Namibia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to secure cooperation. She warned that other nations refusing to cooperate, including India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Somalia, Egypt, and Gabon, could face similar measures.
