Corporate America Cuts 190,000 Tech Jobs to Fund AI

Major corporations including Oracle and Meta have eliminated thousands of roles throughout 2026 to integrate artificial intelligence and streamline global operations.

A broad trend of workforce reductions swept through corporate America in 2026, with job tracker TrueUp reporting over 190,000 tech job losses. Many firms explicitly linked these cuts to the integration of artificial intelligence or the need to fund expensive AI infrastructure.

Oracle led the reductions by eliminating 21,000 jobs over the past year. Meta cut approximately 8,000 employees to increase AI spending, while Barclays announced the removal of 5,000 roles as AI creates efficiency. Other significant cuts occurred at Microsoft, which eliminated 4,800 jobs primarily within its Xbox division, and Uber, which reduced its staff by 3,300.

While the trend spanned gaming, e-commerce, and finance, not all companies attributed the losses to technology. Etsy and Patreon denied that AI adoption drove their specific reductions, and Wix cited currency exchange rates as a contributing factor. Amazon also conducted various cuts across its stores and artificial general intelligence groups to sharpen its focus on customer initiatives.
