Bill Gates Urges India to Develop Local-Language AI

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates stated that decisions regarding artificial intelligence made over the next 12 to 18 months will determine who benefits from the technology for years to come. Speaking from New York on September 24, 2026, Gates emphasized that AI is unlike any previous technology and requires immediate action.

He identified India as having a significant opportunity to use its digital public infrastructure to extend AI benefits to small towns and rural areas. Gates advocated for the creation of local-language AI trained on Indian data to ensure accuracy in agriculture and healthcare, pointing to Maharashtra's MahaVISTAAR advisory service as a successful model for scalable AI. He also highlighted the importance of linguistic accessibility through initiatives like Bhashini and the development of homegrown talent.

While optimistic about the potential for farming and medicine, Gates warned of near-term cybersecurity risks to critical systems, including hospitals. He urged both companies and governments to increase investments in defense to protect these essential services.
