A four-day standoff has erupted in Portadown, Northern Ireland, after the Parades Commission granted the Orange Order permission to march down the Garvaghy Road for the first time in 28 years. The decision followed a High Court ruling that quashed a previous ban due to a procedural error. The Commission imposed strict limits, restricting the march to 35 silent participants without bands or supporters.
The situation devolved into a legal and social crisis over the weekend of September 27. While the High Court in Belfast ultimately upheld the permission in an unprecedented late-night hearing, thousands of nationalist protesters, including First Minister Michelle O'Neill and Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald, blockaded the route.
