Jetstar Replaces Carry-on Weight Limit With Size-Based Fees

Jetstar will replace its 7kg carry-on baggage weight limit with a size-based model effective February 2, 2027. Under the new structure, all tickets include one small underseat bag measuring up to 40 x 30 x 20cm at no extra cost. Passengers wanting to use overhead lockers must purchase Priority Carry-on, which allows a second bag measuring up to 56 x 36 x 23cm and provides priority boarding.

Fees for the Priority Carry-on service will vary by flight length, with some overseas routes costing over $100. The airline will stop routinely weighing bags at boarding gates, though it suggests keeping luggage under 10kg for safety. The policy applies to all Jetstar Airways flights except those operated by Jetstar Japan or group bookings of 10 or more people. Existing bookings for travel after the start date will be upgraded to Priority Carry-on for free.

CEO Stephanie Tully stated the shift aims to optimize overhead locker space and streamline boarding to help flights depart on time. Consumer advocacy group Choice criticized the move, describing the new pricing structure as a cash grab that complicates airfare comparisons. Jetstar defended the policy as a way to maintain low entry-level fares by ensuring customers only pay for the services they use.
