Judge Blocks DOJ Subpoena for Georgia Election Worker Data

U.S. District Judge William Ray quashed a Department of Justice subpoena seeking personal contact information for all 2020 Fulton County election workers.

U.S. District Judge William Ray ruled Tuesday that the U.S. Department of Justice cannot obtain the names, home addresses, emails, and phone numbers of all employees and volunteer poll workers from the 2020 general election in Fulton County, Georgia. Judge Ray quashed the April grand jury subpoena, describing the request as "staggering" and characterizing it as an "arbitrary fishing expedition." The court found that the government's investigative need did not outweigh the burden of disclosure, specifically noting that the statute of limitations for any potential 2020 election crimes has already expired.

The ruling follows a January FBI search of the Fulton County election hub in Palmetto, where agents seized hundreds of boxes of ballots and documents. Despite the court's block on the subpoena, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has launched a "surge" in its priority investigation into the county's 2020 election. An internal memo revealed the deployment of 260 personnel from nationwide field offices to review over 700 documents by a July 17 deadline.

Fulton County officials praised the decision as a necessary step to prevent harassment and protect election worker participation. Conversely, voter integrity group VoterGA criticized the ruling as a threat to voter rights and indicated the Department of Justice should appeal. This legal conflict occurs alongside a broader push by the Trump administration to intervene in election administration, including the deployment of monitors to Michigan cities and threats of criminal liability for officials who maintain non-citizens on voter rolls.
