New York Honors Army Sergeant Killed in Iranian Strike

New York officials and community members held a funeral and vigil on August 1, 2026, for Staff Sergeant Angel Sarah Rampersad, a 28-year-old U.S. Army soldier. Rampersad was killed on July 17 during an Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack at the Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan, where she served with the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command. She died alongside Captain Tyler James Feehan and Private First Class Isabella Gonzales.

The service at Calvary Assembly of God in Ozone Park, Queens, included a police-led motorcade and concluded with a burial at the Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale. Governor Kathy Hochul delivered remarks at the service and ordered flags across New York state to be flown at half-staff. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani attended the service but was excluded from the speaker list. Sources indicated the Rampersad family, who hold conservative views, sought to avoid political distractions due to Mamdani's positions as a democratic socialist and critic of the Iran War. Mamdani's office later released his prepared eulogy to the public.

The casualties occurred within a broader conflict that began February 28 after Israel bombed Iran, resulting in 18 U.S. military deaths. Following the funeral, reports surfaced that the Pentagon moved Rampersad and four other casualties from the Iran War list to a new Overseas Operations list, a move critics describe as an attempt to lower official casualty counts for the war.
