Brian Kemp Extends Georgia Gas Tax Suspension Through November

Governor Brian Kemp extended Georgia's motor fuel excise tax suspension through November 30 to provide financial relief for residents during the Thanksgiving holiday travel period.

Governor Brian Kemp extended Georgia's state of emergency and the suspension of the state motor fuel excise tax through November 30. The move maintains a waiver of 33.3 cents per gallon for gasoline and 37.3 cents per gallon for diesel to provide financial relief for residents ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Kemp consulted with Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones and Speaker of the House Jon Burns before signing the executive order. This action marks the fourth tax suspension this year, following previous suspensions in March, May, and September. The broader state of emergency also removes state weight limits on commercial vehicles and waives penalties for using off-road dyed diesel on public highways.

Data from AAA indicates the suspension has kept Georgia's average regular gas price at approximately $3.66 per gallon, roughly 63 cents below the national average. Diesel averages $5.72 per gallon, about 61 cents below the national mark. While the Governor cited fiscal responsibility, some residents described the suspension as a temporary measure that fails to address the underlying causes of price increases, such as conflict in the Middle East.

The Georgia Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division confirmed that state price-gouging laws remain in effect. The Georgia General Assembly must approve the suspension when it next convenes. The policy remains in place as Georgia voters cast ballots in the 2026 midterm elections amid high national fuel costs.
