UNDP Warns Overlapping Crises Threaten 100 Developing Nations

UNDP Administrator Alexander De Croo warns that high borrowing costs, energy prices, and climate shocks could trigger a financial domino effect across 100 countries.

UNDP Administrator Alexander De Croo warned that developing nations face overlapping crises that could trigger a domino effect, pushing numerous countries into financial distress. De Croo stated the situation has evolved into a crisis impacting approximately 100 countries, driven by inflation, high government borrowing costs, and rising energy prices resulting from the Iran war.

Environmental factors are compounding these economic pressures. The strongest El Nino effect since 1950 is projected to increase food insecurity for an additional 49 million people by 2027. UNDP Chief Economist George Gray Molina reported that governments are rolling back energy subsidies as fiscal buffers deplete, a move that contributed to social unrest in 10 countries during September.

Global policymakers will address these financial and climate challenges at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, scheduled for October 12 to 18.
