Raphaël Glucksmann Wins French Centre-Left Presidential Primary
Raphaël Glucksmann won the French centre-left presidential primary with 66.13% of the vote, positioning himself as the main alternative to Jean-Luc Mélenchon for 2027.
Raphaël Glucksmann, an EU lawmaker and leader of the Place Publique movement, won the French centre-left presidential primary on Sunday with 66.13% of the vote. His victory establishes him as the primary alternative to hard-left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon for the 2027 presidential election.
Glucksmann campaigned on a platform of breaking with both Macronism and the influence of Mélenchon over the French left. He positioned himself as a pro-European, pro-Ukraine candidate and a defender of liberal democracy. The primary saw a turnout of over 120,000 voters, marking a significant decrease from previous socialist primaries.
The result represents a setback for Socialist Party head Olivier Faure, who received 14.5% of the vote. Faure had previously expressed openness to alliances with Mélenchon's France Unbowed party, a position now challenged by Glucksmann's decisive win.
