BP Reports $8.5 Billion Third-Quarter Profit
BP reported a third-quarter profit of $8.5 billion, driven by strong gas trading and high refining margins resulting from global geopolitical conflicts.
BP reported an underlying replacement cost profit of $8.5 billion for the third quarter, significantly exceeding analyst expectations of $6.191 billion. This figure nearly quadruples the $2.2 billion profit recorded during the same period last year.
The company attributed the surge to strong performance in gas and marketing trading and significantly higher refining margins. Operating cash flow for the first nine months of the year reached $28.55 billion, while net debt decreased to $13.87 billion from $26.05 billion in 2025.
This profit spike aligns with a broader industry trend. Rivals Shell and TotalEnergies also reported historically high refining margins caused by conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, which damaged refinery infrastructure and tightened global fuel markets. CEO Meg O'Neill noted that energy markets remain defined by volatility and trade flow disruptions.
