Etisalat and Universities Develop First Operator-Grade 6G Framework

Etisalat UAE and academic partners developed a peer-reviewed engineering framework for 6G networks using centimetre-wave spectrum to increase network capacity threefold.

Etisalat UAE, Khalifa University of Science and Technology, and New York University Abu Dhabi have developed the first peer-reviewed, operator-grade engineering framework for designing 6G networks. Published in the IEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society, the framework utilizes centimetre-wave (cmWave) spectrum to move 6G from theoretical concepts toward practical, real-world deployment.

The research focuses on using advanced Extremely Large Aperture Arrays (ELAA) at 7 GHz cmWave. This methodology allows operators to achieve a 3.0x increase in capacity while maintaining coverage parity with existing 5G grids. By providing practical tools for coverage planning, capacity dimensioning, and interference management, the framework enables the evolution of existing macro networks without requiring extensive network densification.

This collaboration aims to support the goal of a global 6G launch by 2030. The partners emphasize that the project demonstrates the value of combining academic scientific expertise with private sector engineering to create viable and sustainable network infrastructure.
