Michigan Secretary of State Candidates Clash Over Election Priorities

Michigan Secretary of State candidates Garlin Gilchrist and Anthony Forlini detailed their primary campaign priorities on Wednesday, highlighting a divide between campaign finance reform and election security.

Gilchrist, the current Lieutenant Governor and Democratic candidate, proposed a comprehensive overhaul of the state's campaign finance system. He advocated for mandated transparency and stronger disclosure rules for political messaging across digital and traditional media. To ensure compliance, Gilchrist called for faster enforcement of finance laws through coordination with the state attorney general's office and proposed limits on leadership political action committees linked to federal officeholders.

Republican candidate and Macomb County Clerk Anthony Forlini focused his platform on election security and the risks associated with third-party voter registration groups. Forlini cited his office's experience processing over 5,000 redundant registration applications in a two-week period as evidence that such middlemen create unnecessary workloads and jeopardize personal information. While Forlini noted that state legislators have shown little interest in limiting these organizations, he argued that voters should submit information directly to the government.
