Saskatchewan Environmental Society Urges Canada to Abandon Alberta Pipeline
The Saskatchewan Environmental Society is calling on the federal government to cancel plans for a publicly funded oil pipeline in Alberta.
The Saskatchewan Environmental Society is urging the Government of Canada to abandon plans for a new, publicly funded oil pipeline in Alberta. Board member Peter Prebble argues that the project increases dependence on fossil fuels and contradicts national climate commitments, stating that no country should be expanding oil and gas production.
Prebble contends that federal funding should be redirected toward renewable energy, a national electricity grid, and social priorities including health care and education. While the society notes that the exclusion of a northern route avoids environmental risks to the coast of British Columbia, it maintains that the overall proposal puts the planet on a dangerous path.
Governments in Alberta and Saskatchewan support the project, viewing it as a means to expand export capacity and strengthen the energy sector. Conversely, the society argues that global demand for fossil fuels is declining and opposes the use of public money when no private sector proponent is involved.
