Chipotle Opens First Mexican Restaurant in San Pedro Garza García

Chipotle Mexican Grill is opening its first restaurant in Mexico on Thursday, July 16, 2026, in San Pedro Garza García, Nuevo León. The move, executed through a development agreement signed in April 2025 with restaurant operator Alsea, targets the Monterrey metropolitan area due to its status as a business hub and strong economy.

The initial restaurant serves as a proof-of-concept to evaluate local consumer preferences. Following this debut, the company plans to open additional locations in Nuevo León later this year and expand into Mexico City in 2027. This entry is a component of Chipotle's broader "Recipe for Growth" strategy, which aims for 350 to 370 new global openings in 2026, including new markets in South Korea and Singapore.

While executives express confidence in the demand for customizable, high-quality food, the expansion has drawn skepticism on social media. Critics have questioned the viability of selling a corporate version of Mexican cuisine in its home country, citing the previous market failures of U.S. chains such as Taco Bell in Mexico and Domino's Pizza in Italy.
