San Antonio Mayor Seeks Vote on $489 Million Spurs Arena

San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones is calling for a citywide vote in November to determine if the city should issue up to $489 million in revenue bonds for a new San Antonio Spurs arena. The proposed $1.3 billion project, known as Project Marvel, involves at least $500 million from the Spurs and a $311 million contribution already approved by Bexar County voters in November 2025. Jones argues that residents deserve a direct say now that the deal's specific terms are known and that modifications to the project, such as the removal of a land bridge and a planned hotel, justify revisiting the decision.

The Mayor's proposal comes as San Antonio faces a budget deficit of $158 million, which is projected to reach $264 million without intervention. While Jones cites this affordability crisis, opponents note that the arena funds are legally restricted and cannot be used to offset the deficit.

Resistance within the San Antonio City Council has grown, with six members already opposing the ballot measure—a number sufficient to block the proposal. Council members Marc Whyte and Misty Spears have argued that another election is an unnecessary expense and could jeopardize the project. To appear on the November ballot, the City Council must approve the election by August 17.
