Iowa Governor Candidate Zach Lahn Faces Residency Scrutiny

Republican gubernatorial nominee Zach Lahn faces accusations of being a carpetbagger due to his voting history in Kansas and financial ties to the Koch family.

Republican nominee for governor of Iowa Zach Lahn is facing scrutiny over his residency status and financial connections to the Koch family. While Lahn campaigns as a populist and self-made businessman, records show he previously led the Montana chapter of Americans for Prosperity and co-founded a school in Kansas funded by Chase and Annie Koch.

Democratic opponent Rob Sand has labeled Lahn a "Kansas carpetbagger," citing flight records and evidence that Lahn voted in Kansas from 2018 to 2022. Lahn maintains he lives full-time in Iowa and re-registered to vote in the state in October 2024.

Financial questions have also emerged following Lahn's 2020 marriage to Annie Koch, who received an eight-figure settlement after her divorce from Chase Koch. Following the marriage, Lahn's investment activity increased, including a $1 million stake in FirmTech Inc. Lahn has denied receiving financial support from the Kochs for his campaign, and the Koch-funded super PAC Americans for Prosperity Action Inc. has not spent money on his race.
