Tech Giants Commit Trillions to AI via Off-Balance-Sheet Debt

Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon have committed trillions of dollars to AI development through off-balance-sheet obligations that far exceed their disclosed capital expenditures.

Alphabet Inc. and other major technology firms, including Meta Platforms Inc., Microsoft Corporation, and Amazon.com Inc., have committed trillions of dollars to artificial intelligence development. Financial analysis reveals that these off-balance-sheet obligations significantly exceed the capital expenditures reported in official financial statements.

Alphabet faces $798 billion in future investment commitments, while Meta Platforms Inc. faces $696 billion. For Meta, this figure represents ten times its net income over the last twelve months. To finance these initiatives, the companies have increased debt issuance and reduced share buybacks, with Alphabet taking the unusual step of issuing equity.

While some firms utilize revenue backlogs as a financial buffer, Meta lacks this safeguard. This leaves its leveraged AI strategy highly exposed to financial risk if the performance of artificial intelligence fails to meet market and internal expectations.
