UK Petrol Stations Violate Fuel Price Reporting Laws

Hundreds of UK petrol stations are failing to report live fuel price changes to the government Fuel Finder system despite legal mandates.

Hundreds of petrol stations across the United Kingdom are violating legal requirements to report live fuel price changes to Fuel Finder, a government system intended to reduce costs for motorists. Since February 2, all UK forecourts have been legally mandated to report price changes within 30 minutes. However, an analysis by the Press Association found that 1,751 stations had not updated their prices in over a week, a figure that includes 410 supermarket filling stations.

The Competition and Markets Authority has warned it will take enforcement action following the end of a three-month grace period on May 1. The Fuel Finder scheme, supported by Prime Minister Keir Starmer and co-run by technology company VE3, aims to save car-owning households approximately £40 annually by increasing competition.

Simon Williams of the RAC described the findings as concerning, arguing that it is implausible for so many retailers to go a week without a price change given that most receive fuel weekly. While the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the CMA maintain that the majority of stations are complying, the Petrol Retailers Association suggested that smaller rural sites may update prices less frequently due to monthly delivery schedules.
