Alberta Prosperity Project Collects Signatures for Independence Referendum

The Alberta Prosperity Project and Stay Free Alberta are gathering signatures to trigger a provincial referendum on independence from Canada.

The Alberta Prosperity Project and Stay Free Alberta are conducting a rural grassroots campaign to collect signatures for a petition to trigger a provincial referendum on Alberta's independence from Canada. Organizers must verify approximately 177,000 to 178,000 signatures by early May 2026 to secure an autumn referendum, though leadership has set a broader goal of one million signatures to force negotiations with Ottawa.

During town hall meetings in Red Deer, Eckville, Didsbury, and Millet, leaders alleged that the current Canadian government is influenced by the World Economic Forum and Communist China. The movement claims to have secured an alliance with the Parti Québécois and maintains that the U.S. State Department has promised immediate recognition of an independent Alberta, including assistance in establishing a military.

Opposition to the movement includes the Forever Canadian petition, which has gathered over 400,000 signatures to keep the province in Canada. Additionally, the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation has launched legal challenges, arguing that the enabling legislation for the referendum is illegal because it fails to recognize First Nations' rights.
