Voting Rights Groups Push Registration and Early Turnout

Advocacy groups in Virginia and New York are urging citizens to meet registration deadlines and utilize early voting options ahead of November elections.

Voter registration and early voting efforts are intensifying across Virginia and New York as deadlines approach. In Virginia, the deadline for new voter registration is October 23, though eligible citizens may still cast provisional ballots through same-day registration until polls close on November 3. Early voting in the state has already seen nearly 800,000 votes cast, nearly double the volume recorded at the same point during the 2022 midterms.

Joan Porte of the Virginia League of Women Voters has encouraged registrants to sign up for permanent absentee ballots to simplify the process. To ensure registration forms are recorded by the deadline, Robert Lester of the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy recommends that voters have their documents hand-stamped at a postal counter.

Meanwhile, a coalition including labor unions, faith leaders, and immigrant rights groups is rallying in New City, New York, on October 22 to promote early voting, which runs from October 24 through November 1. Organizers are highlighting October 24 as a Golden Day, the only date New Yorkers can register to vote and cast their ballots simultaneously. To support this effort, the nonpartisan Election Protection program is deploying hundreds of trained poll monitors across New York to assist voters in multiple languages and counter disinformation.
