Novo Shares Drop 8% After New Blockbuster Drug Strategy
Novo Nordisk announced plans to launch five blockbuster drugs by 2030 to diversify its portfolio, though investors reacted with skepticism.
Novo Nordisk announced a new strategic plan during its Capital Markets Day on Monday, aiming to launch more than five potential blockbuster drugs by 2030. The company intends to diversify beyond its core diabetes and obesity portfolio by expanding into cardiovascular, liver, and blood disorders. This move is designed to mitigate the financial impact of semaglutide losing exclusivity in the early 2030s.
Despite the expansion plans, shares of the Danish drugmaker fell 8% as investors expressed skepticism about the company's ability to derisk its future trajectory. CEO Mike Doustdar acknowledged the market reaction, stating that the company must rebuild trust through financial and scientific results.
As part of its obesity strategy, the company is betting on a fragmented market. It is developing a range of treatments, including CagriSema, which is scheduled for a 2027 launch, and is expanding its oral medication franchise to increase patient accessibility.
