New Zealand June Trade Surplus Drops to NZD 23 Million

New Zealand recorded a merchandise trade surplus of NZD 23 million in June, falling significantly below market forecasts due to rising imports.

The Government of New Zealand reported a merchandise trade surplus of NZD 23 million for June, marking a sharp decline from the revised NZD 577 million surplus seen in May. This figure fell well below the NZD 250 million expected by market analysts, as monthly imports slightly outpaced exports.

Year-over-year data shows a broader trend of growth in both sectors. Goods exports rose 25% to approximately NZD 8.1 billion, fueled by strong demand for meat and dairy in the United States and shipments of cereals, milk, and meat to China. Simultaneously, imports climbed 28% year-over-year to approximately NZD 8.1 billion, driven by business investment in petroleum products, vehicles, and machinery alongside healthy domestic demand.

While trade volumes remain robust, the narrowing monthly surplus suggests that domestic economic activity is currently keeping pace with strong overseas demand. This balance of domestic activity and inflation continues to dominate the policy outlook for the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.
