Turkey Pledges Defensive Military Aid to Saudi Arabia

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced Turkey will provide defensive military support to Saudi Arabia while ruling out offensive troop deployments to Yemen.

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced that Türkiye is providing defensive military assistance to Saudi Arabia following Houthi attacks on Saudi oil and military installations. The support follows the Mecca Joint Defense Alliance, a pact signed in August by Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan, which establishes that an attack on one member is an attack on all.

Fidan clarified that Türkiye's involvement is strictly defensive and will not include sending troops to carry out attacks on foreign territory. Potential assistance includes low- and medium-altitude aerial defense systems, drone technologies, and electronic warfare support. This follows a meeting of the alliance's Strategic Political and Defense Committee in Riyadh on October 5, where members pledged military assistance amid the escalating civil war in Yemen.

Because the Turkish parliament has not yet ratified the pact, current support remains bilateral. The Turkish government has submitted the agreement to the president and intends to send it to Parliament for ratification shortly. While the three nations have agreed to the rapid deployment of forces and capabilities in Saudi Arabia, Turkish officials maintain the agreement will not draw members into offensive operations.
