AI Companies Consult Faith Leaders to Integrate Moral Frameworks
Anthropic, OpenAI, and other AI leaders are consulting religious and ethical experts to integrate diverse moral frameworks into artificial intelligence training.
Leading artificial intelligence companies, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, have begun consulting with philosophers, ethicists, and faith leaders to integrate religious moral frameworks into AI training. The initiative aims to develop models that reflect a broad aggregate of humanity's moral views to ensure AI behavior is morally sound.
Anthropic has met with representatives from more than 15 religious and cross-cultural groups to discuss complex topics such as educational access and the existence of souls. Meta and Google have specifically engaged in meetings with the Vatican to discuss the intersection of faith and technology. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has advocated for models that reflect a weighted average of human moral perspectives.
Despite these efforts, anthropologists and religious scholars warn that treating faith as a set of extractable rules may distort non-Abrahamic traditions. Critics argue this approach risks homogenizing diverse worldviews into a Western-centric or diluted moral average, potentially stripping religious traditions of their organic context and ritual significance.
