UP Election Chief Apologizes for Sarcastic Social Media Post
Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer Navdeep Rinwa apologized after an official social media account made sarcastic remarks about caste and minorities following voter list errors.
Chief Electoral Officer of Uttar Pradesh Navdeep Rinwa issued a formal apology on Tuesday after his office posted a sarcastic response to allegations of caste bias in voter lists. The controversy began when Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh questioned Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar about software errors that altered names on voter slips, such as changing "Ramhit Yadav" to "Ram ne Yadav ko Maara" (Ram hit Yadav). Singh asked if the software was "casteist" and questioned why the errors specifically targeted certain surnames.
The CEO's office initially defended the software, stating that computers are not casteist. However, the office then posted a remark thanking God that "Ram did not kill any minority," suggesting that such an error would have led to allegations of communalism. This response drew sharp criticism from both the Aam Aadmi Party and the Indian National Congress.
Rinwa later admitted the tone and language of the post were inappropriate for an official handle and not in line with expected communication standards. He explained that the errors were caused by software that translated English words into Hindi rather than transliterating them. Rinwa pledged that future communications would be polite and formal and stated that action is being taken to prevent further software errors.
