Tesla Pivots to AI and Robotics With $25 Billion Investment

Tesla is shifting its core business toward Optimus humanoid robots and Cybercab robotaxis, increasing 2026 capital expenditure to over $25 billion despite declining electric vehicle sales.

Tesla Inc. is pivoting from a traditional electric vehicle manufacturer to an artificial intelligence and robotics company. During its Q1 2026 earnings reports in April, Elon Musk announced that the company has increased its annual capital expenditure forecast to over $25 billion to fund AI infrastructure, the Optimus humanoid robot, and the autonomous Cybercab. This strategic shift follows a decline in automotive sales and loss of global market share to rivals like BYD.

Tesla has commenced production of the Cybercab, a steering-wheel-less autonomous vehicle, at Giga Texas in Austin. While the company expanded its robotaxi services into Dallas and Houston, Musk revised the rollout timeline, now expecting operations in approximately a dozen U.S. states by the end of 2026. He cautioned that material revenue from robotaxis will not occur until 2027. Additionally, Tesla is retrofitting over 4 million Hardware 3 vehicles with new computers and cameras, as Musk admitted these older models cannot achieve unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) via software alone.

The company is also prioritizing the Optimus V3 humanoid robot, with production expected to start at the Fremont, California, plant in late July or August 2026. Tesla is converting production lines previously used for the Model S and Model X to accommodate robots, with long-term capacity targets of 10 million units annually in Texas. Musk stated that the upcoming Roadster will be the only manually driven vehicle in Tesla's long-term lineup. Financially, Tesla reported Q1 revenue of $22.4 billion, though the surge in AI spending is expected to result in negative free cash flow for the remainder of the year.
