SpaceX IPO Reaches $2 Trillion Without Disrupting Market Indexes

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. reached a $2 trillion market capitalization during its summer IPO but had minimal impact on cap-weighted indexes due to limited public float.

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. executed a record-setting initial public offering this summer, achieving a $2 trillion market capitalization on its first day of trading. The debut initially sparked investor concerns that the company's massive valuation would cause extreme overweighting in cap-weighted indexes, such as the Nasdaq 100, potentially forcing index funds to sell other holdings to maintain balance.

Morningstar reported on Wednesday that these risks were mitigated by a limited public share float. According to the research firm, SpaceX represented only about 0.1% of the Total Market Index by the end of August.

Despite the limited immediate impact, analysts warn that market concentration could still rise. Upcoming IPOs from other AI leaders, including OpenAI and Anthropic, may necessitate further adjustments to mega-cap index segments to ensure they remain aligned with the broader market.
