BMW Recalls 27,720 Vehicles Over Driveshaft Connection Defect
BMW is recalling 27,720 luxury vehicles across three model lines due to a driveshaft flaw that could cause power loss or allow cars to roll away.
BMW is recalling 27,720 luxury vehicles from its 5-Series, 7-Series, and 8-Series lines due to a defect in the driveshaft connection linking the drivetrain to the rear differential. The flaw involves premature wear at the joint connecting the rear differential, driveshaft, and transmission, which can lead to a loss of motive power to the rear axle.
In rare instances, the defect creates a risk that a vehicle could roll away if the parking brake is not engaged while in park. The recall affects 18,150 5-Series models from 2021 to 2023, 7,372 8-Series models from 2022 to 2026, and 2,198 7-Series models from 2024 to 2026. Specific affected models include the 840i and 840i xDrive, the 540i, 540i xDrive, M550i xDrive, and the 750e xDrive.
BMW reported the issue to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and stated that no accidents or injuries have been reported to date. Authorized dealers will inspect the connection and either apply adhesive or replace the driveshaft and rear differential at no cost to the owner. Notification letters are scheduled to be mailed to affected owners starting October 2.
