OpenAI Secures $11 Billion Initial Funding at $1.25 Trillion Valuation
OpenAI closed an initial $11 billion funding portion valuing the company at $1.25 trillion as part of a larger potential $20 billion round.
OpenAI closed an initial funding portion of approximately $11 billion on Friday, establishing a company valuation of $1.25 trillion. This first close is the beginning of a larger funding round that may reach $20 billion in total over the next several weeks.
The company reduced its original targets of raising $30 billion or more at a $1.4 trillion valuation. This adjustment follows a downturn in the public AI market and growing concerns regarding data center construction and infrastructure spending.
Investors contributing to the first close include Coatue Management and T. Rowe Price. Other participants in the broader round include SoftBank Group Corp., Sequoia Capital, Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, and a syndicate of backers from the United Arab Emirates. OpenAI is currently coordinating with investment banks to attract high-net-worth individuals and retail investors.
