IonQ and Rigetti Compete as Tech Giants Build Quantum Ecosystems

Quantum computing firms and technology giants are racing to capture an industry that McKinsey & Company estimates could generate up to $2.7 trillion in economic value by 2035. While the current market is valued at $1 billion, projections suggest it will grow to $4.4 billion by 2028.

IonQ has transitioned to a full-stack platform incorporating computing, networking, sensing, and security. The company reported $64.7 million in revenue for the first quarter of 2026 and has expanded sales of its 256-qubit trapped-ion system to more than 30 countries. In contrast, Rigetti Computing focuses on superconducting processors and recently launched the 108-qubit Cepheus-1-108Q. Rigetti reported $4.4 million in first-quarter revenue and remains dependent on government contracts, though CEO Subodh Kulkarni claims the company can achieve quantum advantage within three years by reaching 1,000 qubits.

Simultaneously, Nvidia Corporation, Microsoft Corporation, and Alphabet Inc. are establishing themselves as primary upstream providers. Nvidia Corporation utilizes CUDA-Q software and the NVQLink interconnect to link quantum processors with GPUs. Microsoft Corporation operates the Azure Quantum cloud and unveiled the Majorana 2 topological chip in June 2026, which it claims is 1,000 times more reliable than the previous version. Alphabet's Quantum AI division continues developing superconducting chips, including the 105-qubit Willow processor, which demonstrated computational advantage over classical computers in October 2025.
