US and ASEAN Demand Release of Aung San Suu Kyi

The United States Department of State and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) demanded the immediate and unconditional release of detained former Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners on August 7, 2026. The joint pressure follows a meeting on August 3 in Naypyidaw between Suu Kyi and a representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which provided the first public confirmation of her well-being since the February 2021 military coup.

While the State Department and the ASEAN chair, the Philippines, welcomed the visit as a potential pathway to regular humanitarian and medical access, other stakeholders viewed the move as strategic. Kim Aris, the son of Suu Kyi, characterized the military government's decision to allow the visit as a tactical maneuver rather than a humanitarian gesture. He noted the timing coincided with an official visit to Thailand by Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing to meet with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

The military regime continues to face Western sanctions and exclusion from ASEAN summits for failing to adhere to the Five-Point Consensus peace plan. The State Department urged the military to engage in dialogue to end the post-coup conflict, while the ASEAN chair reaffirmed the role of its special envoy in implementing the regional peace framework.
